Why maintaining a football jersey is crucial
A well-maintained football jersey lasts for years. A poorly washed jersey can lose its shape, fade, or have its embroidery peel off within the first few weeks. Whether you own a fan jersey for €25 or a collector's item for over €100, the care instructions are the same—and they make all the difference.
Golden rules for washing a football jersey
✅ Rule 1: Wash at 30°C maximum
Polyester, the main material of football jerseys, cannot withstand high temperatures. Above 40°C, the fabric deforms, shrinks, and loses its technical properties. Always set your machine to 30°C maximum.
✅ Rule 2: Turn the jersey inside out before washing
Always wash the jersey inside out. This protects the embroidery, flocked numbers and letters, and preserves the colors on the outside of the fabric.
✅ Rule 3: Delicate cycle or sports wash
Use the delicate, synthetic, or sports wash program on your washing machine. Avoid intensive cycles that can damage the seams.
✅ Rule 4: Mild detergent, no fabric softener
Use a mild detergent for technical clothing (Woolite Sport, Perwoll Sport, etc.). Do not use fabric softener—it clogs the polyester fibers and destroys the Dri-FIT or dryCELL properties of the fabric.
✅ Rule 5: Never tumble dry
Tumble dryer heat is the number one enemy of a football jersey. Polyester fabric shrinks and deforms under the effect of heat. Always air dry flat or on a hanger, in the shade.
✅ Rule 6: Ironing not recommended
Ironing is generally not necessary for football jerseys. If you must iron, do so on the reverse side at a low temperature, without steam, avoiding embroidery and prints.
Specific stains: how to treat them?
Grass stain
Pre-treat with a little liquid detergent directly on the stain. Leave for 15 minutes before machine washing at 30°C.
Mud stain
Allow to dry completely before gently brushing. Never rub a wet mud stain—you'll spread it. Then wash normally.
Sweat stain
To eliminate stubborn sweat odors, soak the jersey for 30 minutes in cold water with a little white vinegar before machine washing.
Blood stain
Cold water is your friend—never hot water (which sets the blood). Rinse immediately with cold water then treat with Marseille soap before washing.
Storing collector jerseys
For retro or limited edition jerseys you want to keep in perfect condition:
- 🗂️ Store flat in a drawer or in a transparent protective cover
- 🗂️ Away from direct light (which fades fabrics over time)
- 🗂️ In a dry place, away from humidity
- 🗂️ For very precious items, frame them in a special jersey display frame
